An early interest in railways and public transport has directed Andy Byford’s career. He went from London’s underground “Tube” where he was responsible for customer service on three of the busiest lines to Sydney, Australia as COO of Rail Corporation. Mr. Byford joined the third largest North American transit agency, the TTC, in 2011. As our first speaker for the 2013-2014 series, Andy Byford will share his informed perspective on what lies ahead for the Toronto Transit Commission.

Her business column on CBC Radio One’s show, Metro Morning, reaches a million listeners in the GTA. Armine Yalnizyan appears on the Big Picture Panel, a popular weekly feature of CBC TV’s Lang and O’Leary Exchange. Ms Yalnizyan will bring her timely, provocative perspective to current events.

Allison Jorgens worked for over a decade as a food label specialist for grocers and food manufacturers and is the author Read It With A Grain of Salt - The Truth About Canadian Food Labels From An Insider. She has reviewed thousands of food labels for many of Canada’s leading private label grocery brands and a variety of importers. It is her wide-ranging experience in regulatory-compliance label reviews that makes Ms Jorgens’ knowledge unique – and her perspective all the more shocking.

Lawyer and Author: 28 Seconds

A night that began with a dinner to celebrate his 12th wedding anniversary ended in a jail cell for Michael Bryant, the Harvard-educated lawyer, politician, and CEO, when he was charged with dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death. Though the charges were eventually dropped, nothing could undo what had happened. Speaking publicly for the first time of his personal challenges, Bryant’s is a dramatic story of inspiration, survival, tough choices, and transformation.

Poet, Playwright, Short-Story Writer and Novelist

TOPIC: Michael Redhill’s Consolation

A reading from Michael Redhill’s historical novel, and a discussion about civic identity in Toronto from a literary perspective.

Born in Baltimore but raised in Toronto, Michael Redhill attended Indiana University, York University (Toronto) and graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts in English. In addition to creating award-winning poetry, fiction, and drama, Redhill is also the editor of Brick, one of Canada's premier literary journals.

Redhill is also an established playwright. Building Jerusalem (2001), a drama set on the eve of 20th century Toronto, won the Dora Mavor Moore Award, the Chalmers Award and was nominated for a GOVERNOR GENERAL’S AWARD.

Founder and Executive Director of Book Clubs for Inmates

TOPIC: Book Clubs for Inmates

The organization began four years ago with the first book club in Collins Bay Institution in Kingston. It has expanded rapidly since then, and now book clubs are in every federal penitentiary in Ontario. More than thirty–five volunteers are trained to lead the book clubs which meet once a month, providing inmates with the opportunity to develop a love of reading and a place where wide ranging discussions take place on all the great questions of life, so readily available in good literature.

Bill is an accomplished historian, tour guide, writer, photographer and videographer chronicling the past and current history of Toronto. Bill does walking tours of Toronto, and executive van tours to Niagara Falls, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Prince Edward County. Being Sicilian Bill can also take you on an executive tour of Sicily. Bill was born and raised in Toronto's High Park district and he is going to share with us the history of his company Genova Tours and his experiences.
